Train watching at Hakata

Hi all,
Without an expensive shinkansen ticket, is it possible to be at the platform to watch the bullet trains arrive and depart? If not, is there any good spot to do some train watching?
Thanks!

Yes, with a so called nyujoken (“üꌔ) ticket for 140 yen you can enter to the platforms for up to two hours.

Not directly relevant for Hakata, but just in case . . . . . . if your itinerary includes Tōkyō, and if JR East also offer nyūjōken on their turf (haven't tried buying one myself so can't say first-hand), the shinkansen platforms at Tōkyō Station are a great place for trainspotting. The fact that multiple shinkansen lines use those platforms, each with its own different set of trains, adds quite a bit of variety to the experience. I once did a bit of informal trainspotting whilst waiting for a morning ride to Sendai - without expending much effort I was able to see several different shinkansen trains at the same place: http://withinstrikingdistance.wordpress.com/2013/09/05/field-report-se...Cheers and happy trainspotting.
