Mt. Fuji - What else to do that day?

Hi - We're planning on visiting Mt. Fuji later this week. Questions:
1. We're based in Tokyo - should we book a tour or is this a day trip we can navigate on our own via train?
2. If we can get there via train, should we head to Hakone and look to access Mt. Fuji there, or is there a better way? We are not looking to climb, just going to take the cable car to get the best views of Mt. Fuji.
3. What else do you recommend to do while there in at Mt. Fuji? Are there any other areas that we could visit nearby during the second 1/2 of the day?
