A lot of the individual stores will be closed on the 1st. If possible I'd try to go another day.

As most of the stores will be closed on the 1st Jan, what about on the 31st Dec 2014 and 2nd Jan 2015?
Please advise so that I can re-schedule my plan.

The stores will be open on 31 Dec, but they will be so much crowded.
Most of the stores will be closed on 1-3 Jan.
