I read that the best bargains and sales in Tokyo are on January 1st, but looking through some shops websites, they are all closed on Jan 1st! So, what's open? Is it true the best deals of the year are on this day? What can you do in Tokyo on Jan 1st besides temples and big malls?

Is it true the best deals of the year are on this day? No, on this month. We call it something like a "Winter Bargain Sale". The start of this sale is called "Hatsu-Uri". It had been usually on Jan 4th after "Sanganichi", however, most stores do on Jan 2nd recently, while some do on Jan 1st. "Fuku-Bukuro" is the iconic items on "Hatsu-Uri". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FukubukuroWhat can you do in Tokyo on Jan 1st besides temples and big malls? We usually send the day at home with Osechi, Zoni(Mochi), Nengajo, Otoshidama, and so on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_New_YearThe day is quite silent in the morning, because most sit up late in the New Year Eve to hear Joya-no-Kane. Some try to get up early to see Hatsu-Hinode, though. The rest go to Hatsumode or Hatsu-uri. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsum%C5%8DdeThe places for younger generations are not likely to be affected so seriously.
