Anyone have any suggestions for places in Kyoto that has many places to walk/hike (more nature the better) and not too expensive accomodations?
Thank you.

I believe you mean Kyoto City.
Kyoto City is really small. You can cycle the perimiter in about two hours.
For nature places: Mt Hiei & Arashiyama. Kibune is pretty nice too.
Arashiyama hotels are pretty pricey. For Mt Hiei you've got to try hotels near the base of the cable car since I highly doubt anyone stays on the mountain. I don't even think the local religious do so.
Kibune has some hotels too.
But all in all, Kyoto being as small as it is, any hotel near a station should be good enough.

Accommodations in Otsu are reasonable. Hike (Kyoto): Mt. Atago, Kiyotaki (Takao-Atago), Yamashina-Inariyama, Himukai Shrine-Ginkaku-ji, Kurama-Kibune Hike (Shiga): Mt. Hiei, Mt. Hira, Mt. Akasaka, Mt. Horai

I'd stay at Nara which has the park and other natural places. Or Hikone which has a lot of hikes, and nice walks around the lake. But for a good place to stay in Kyoto that has great walks, try Westin Miyako. The japanese style rooms arent too expensive, and it has a great walk to the top of the hill it is on with views out over Kyoto.

Great ideas everyone. Thank you.
In general, what is a good place in the Kansai area that has great hiking and places to walk.
If possible, I want to spend the whole day without taking any public transportation.
Anyone have experience with someonthing like this?
