I plan to travel to Yamadera and Dewa Sanzan, early October. I have questions for u; - How much time should I spare for Yamadera temple. - What is the shortest way to travel from Yamadera to Tsuruoka? - Is it possible to travel to three shrines in one day, and back to Tokyo, on early October? - it seems difficult to find hotel in Tsuruoka. How can I find one?
Many thanks.

3 or 4 hours should be enough

Yamadera - Yamagata - Shinjo - Amurume - Tsuruoka
- Is it possible to travel to three shrines in one day, and back to Tokyo, on early October?
It is not possible to visit all three shrines in a day and get back to Tokyo. You will probably not be able to visit Gas-san due to it being closed due to snow.

There seems to be quite a few Shuboku's that I've seen as I'm considering visiting here in late June....

Many thanks for your useful info.
Let me ask one more question. How much time should I spare for Hagoro-san and Yudono-san then?

I haven't been to Dewa Sanzan by public transport so can't really advise on the times. It depends a lot on how much you want to walk I guess ... I have been there in September and my guess is that snow shouldn't be a problem at Gassan in October. Here are some photos from late September. http://ponkanchan.blogspot.jp/2009/09/yamagata-ga-san.htmlYou need to be really aware of train timetables because trains and buses are infrequent.

Considering your hotel options: I remember at least two business hotels at tsuruoka station - one of them the route inn tsuruoka ekimae http://www.route-inn.co.jp/english/pref/reserve_frame_en.php?hotel_id=... (you can find them via booking.com as well but they have only a few rooms available that way so it's best to use the direct website - furthermore the hotel name is only written in katakana, so it is recommended to look it up before). We stayed there in november '13 and it was quite nice - they also feature a considerably priced restaurant.
