If you haven't booked yet, try to get something as close to the market as possible to save money on access. If possible I would try getting to the market more like 3:30 to guarantee yourself a spot at the auctions as they have been known to run out of spots by 4:00.

I agree to get someone close by. At least it would be cheaper to cab there i.e. under 4000 yen from Shinagawa I was told by an acquaintance.

There is no bus or train that early in the morning. My husband and I went to Japan last October and he wanted to go there. I found these sites, when doing my research. Hope they help. (We decided not to bother, though.)

If you would like to see Tsukiji fish market, You have to go more early before 4:00 am by Taxi or walk. Now many tourist make line until around 3:30 for enter the market. But even you make line there, there are no guarantee for enter. Good Luck.

Just FYI, Tsukiji Fish Market basically closed on Sunday, Wednesday, and national holiday. You can find 2015 calender of Tsukiji from here.
