One day in Nikko 2015/2/7 21:07
Hello!
We are planning to visit Japan in April.
We will be staying for about 4-5 days in a hotel in central Tokyo.
We really want to visit Nikko for a one-day trip.
My questions are:
1) Is it worthwhile?
2) Is there enough time to visit the temples AND the national park?
3) Do you suggest something else?

Thank you very much!

1) Is it worthwhile?

It depends on the person. But if you are somewhat interested in Japanese culture, it will likely be worthwhile.

2) Is there enough time to visit the temples AND the national park?

You will have to start early and travel at a relatively fast pace in order to cover both. Of course, you will be limited to how many places you will be able to see in each area.

Note that renovation works currently have a big impact on a visit to Rinnoji (but people interested in temple preservation works may actually be interested in that aspect). Also, there are some construction works going on at Toshogu, but in my opinion there are so many other attractions at the shrine that it has no big impact.

But just that you know in advance...

We went to Nikko for a day trip from Tokyo (Shinagawa), using the JR, as we had a JR Pass, so via Utsunomiya. This is a little slower than other travel options, eg Tobu.
We had a huge hotel buffet breakfast before travelling, so we wouldnft need a lunch stop, and arrived around 10.30am. Found a coffee place, with Australian wine in display, just up from the JR Station, before heading out on the bus to the temple/shrine area.
We were really all walked out by about 3.30pm, and were glad we hadnft attempted to see the waterfalls, lake etc : leaving that for another trip.
The Shrine and temple area is superb: so many options, so much to see and absorb, so many photo opportunities.....we loved it.
Be sure no to miss the Shoyoen garden at Rinnoji temple: it was stunning, but we went in autumn.

We just did the temples in the one day. You could do the National Park and head back to Tokyo really late eg after 7pm.
Don't miss Tamozawa Imperial Villa - really amazing
