Safety in Tokyo and Osaka 2015/2/27 10:54
I read here at this website that some of the adult entertainment areas of Tokyo and Osaka is not particularly safe as compared with other part of the city. What is considered to be unsafe? Arm robbery, harassment, pick pockets, etc? I've been many part of the worlds and considered myself to be streetwise and will not do anything to attract attention to myself.

I think they may be referring to Kabukicho in Tokyo...this is a somewhat seedy area in that it's a lot of host and hostess bars. men and women are dressed very well and some stand in the front to solicit customers.

In many of the bars in this area and Roppongi, there are Nigerians that aggressively try to solicit people to go to the bars. I saw one that followed someone for half a block. It is best to not make eye contact when they try to talk to you...

Other than that, tokyo and Osaka was safe.

I didn't see them in Osaka! But I did see some hosts in Dotobori. I was with my boyfriend when I went and I didn't have any issues. My sister was by herself in Kabukicho and one followed her a fair distance but luckily there was a Don Quikote that was open.

The adult entertainment area in Tokyo and Osaka is mostly former red light district which adult pornographic shops, strip clubs and prostitution still go on.
There are large number of restaurants and bars/pubs locate in those area. Thus, fighting, robbing, scamming, assault often happen.

I'm a female who has walked around at night in Tokyo and Osaka and I consider these both to be safe compared to my home country (Australia). The areas considered 'unsafe' in Tokyo are the night club and red light areas in Shinjuku, Shin-Okubo and Roppongi Hills. Even then I felt safe walking around alone at night, I was just more aware of my surroundings than normal. I think it's highly unlikely that you will be robbed or assaulted just walking down the street, from my understand most violence happens to those who engage with the staff who work at the venues. Sometimes drunk salarymen try to talk to you and follow you for a little bit but they tend to be pretty harmless. If you feel unsafe I suggest you buy a personal alarm or avoid these areas at night.
