Daisetsuzan in late April/Early May? 2015/2/28 23:58
Going to be in Hokkaido in the first week or so of May and the tail end of April, and looking for things to do. Would love to spend days hiking through Daisetsuzan but that seems impossible due to there still being snow, so just wonder what it actually is possible to do there during this time?

I've only seen mention of skiing/snowboarding being possible, but that it's a slightly advanced area not for beginners, so that seems out for me to. As such is there anything else one can enjoy in the area? Thanks.

The onsen and the scenery can be enjoyed year around at base towns such as Asahidake Onsen and Sounkyo Onsen:

As for hiking, indeed, most of the national park is still snow covered, and you would need appropriate tools and experience to do snow mountain touring.

But it seems that guided snow shoeing tours are offered at Kurodake:

The ski resort on Kurodake is scheduled to be open until early May

Asahidake also has ski slopes - I think also until early May:

Both are not for beginners.

Ahhh so just the onsens really then for me. Guess I'll just cut it out of my schedule and replace it with a trip to Jigokudani/Noboribetsu or something instead, and save Daitsetsuzan for an eventual autumn return. Thanks for the info.

In average year your time of visit is cherry blossom season in Hokkaido. 2 popular sakura destinations are the Shizunai Nijukken Road and Matsumae Castle.

Early May is also a good time for tulip and pink moss in Eastern Hokkaido. There are the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park, Takinoue Park and Higashi-mokoto Shibazakura Park.

I had no idea about tulips/moss in May, only knew about the lavender/etc later in the year. Thanks, think I'll give that a go!
