Nyuto Onsen (Tsurunoyu Onsen) 2015/3/7 13:33
Hello.
When is a good time to visit Nyuto Onsen ?
I was thinking of end October; will it be too cold then ?
I assume there is no snow yet then ?

Also, is Tsurunoyu Onsen or Yamanoyado better ?
As we will not have our own car, what is the best way to get from Lake Towada to Nyuto Onsen ?

Intend to spend 2 nights at Nyuto Onsen; is there anything to do there ?
Does the ryokan provide free shuttle service between village centre in Nyuto Onsen ?
Is it possible to visit Lake Tawaza on a day trip from Nyuto Onsen ?

Also, what is the best way to get from Nyuto Onsen to Akita ?

Thank you.

When is a good time to visit Nyuto Onsen?

The best time in my opinion is winter (January and February) and autumn color season (usually best around mid to late October), but I also enjoyed spring (when fukinoto plants come out of the soil everywhere), and imagine summer to be great, too with lush vegetation and lower temperatures than down in the valley.

I was thinking of end October; will it be too cold then ?

No, it is never too cold if you bring appropriate clothing.

I assume there is no snow yet then ?

No, it is rather unlikely that there is snow already in late October.

Also, is Tsurunoyu Onsen or Yamanoyado better ?

It is personal preference. By far my favorite are the Honjin rooms of the Tsurunoyu Onsen. After that, I would probably prefer the Yamanoyado rooms over the regular rooms at Tsurunoyu Onsen; however, Yamanoyado does not have direct access to the wonderful baths of Tsurunoyu Onsen.

As we will not have our own car, what is the best way to get from Lake Towada to Nyuto Onsen ?

Through the mountains via Kazuno and Tamagawa Onsen. Very scenic. I recommend a stop at Tamagawa Onsen:

Intend to spend 2 nights at Nyuto Onsen; is there anything to do there ?

Onsen hopping. All other ryokan in the area also open their baths to non-syaing visitors.

Does the ryokan provide free shuttle service between village centre in Nyuto Onsen ?

There is a shuttle bus between all the ryokan, and you can use it for free if you buy the Yu Meguri ticket that lets you use the other ryokans' baths. Alternatively, since you have a car, it is easier to drive around yourself because the bus is not very frequent.

Is it possible to visit Lake Tawaza on a day trip from Nyuto Onsen ?

Yes, no problem. It is less than an hour from Nyuto Onsen.

Also, what is the best way to get from Nyuto Onsen to Akita ?

The obvious one. Note that the nice town of Kakunodate is along the way:

Dear Uji,

Many thanks for your prompt and informative reply.
Unfortunately we will NOT have our own car.

Hence my question on how best to travel from Aomori to Nyuto Onsen, in particular to Tsurunoyu Onsen ?
I am travelling with my elderly mother; she is able but obviously no steep climbs / walks plus we will have our luggage.
Also, how best to travel from Nyuto Onsen to Akita ?

Is there a guided tour departing from Nyuto Onsen to Lake Tazawa ?

Thanks.

Unfortunately we will NOT have our own car.

Sorry for my lack of attention.

Hence my question on how best to travel from Aomori to Nyuto Onsen, in particular to Tsurunoyu Onsen ?

By JR bus shinkansen and bus via Hachinohe, Morioka and Tazawako Station.

Also, how best to travel from Nyuto Onsen to Akita ?

By bus and shinkansen via Tazawako Station.

Is there a guided tour departing from Nyuto Onsen to Lake Tazawa ?

I doubt it.

Nyuto Onsen (Tsurunoyu Onsen) 2015/3/7 16:09
Thanks again Uji, and no need to say sorry :)

- do you know if there is a direct bus from Nyuto Onsen to Akita ?
- is Akita city worth a night stay or very little in the way for a tourist ?
If nothing much then may just fly out straight from Akita airport to my next destination (Nagoya).
- is there an email address for the Nyuto Onsen tourist office or Tawado-ko tourist office ?
- my turn to apologise, I meant to ask the best possible way to travel from Lake Towada (Yasumiya ?) to Nyuto Onsen ?
(NOT Aomori to Nyuto Onsen)

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any such direct bus. But the transfer at Tazawako Station is relatively easy.

There is not much to see. The art museum seems to be nice.

If nothing much then may just fly out straight from Akita airport to my next destination (Nagoya).

Note that the airport is quite a bit outside of the city.

I am afraid I don't know such an e-mail address. It may exists, though.

That's what I thought. My answer outlines how to travel from Towada to Nyuto. It is quite a long journey with many transfers.

Nyuto Onsen (Tsurunoyu Onsen) 2015/3/9 13:09
Apologies for my previous thread as the site was down for a while since yesterday.

I found this site : http://www.airportliner.net/timeSelect.php?li=5
As I cannot read Japanese well, is this a shuttle bus service from Nyuto Onsen to Akita airport ?
Does the service operate in end October ?

Also, is one full day in Nyuto Onsen sufficient if I intend to :
- visit Lake Tazawa in the morning for a cruise
- onsen hopping in the afternoon ?
Note that we have to rely on public transport.
What is the bus timetable between Nyuto Onsen and Lake Tazawa, and cruise schedule ?
Many thanks.

Re: Nyuto Onsen (Tsurunoyu Onsen) 2015/3/9 13:38
About the link, 秋田空港 is Akita Airport and 乳頭温泉地区 is Nyuutou Onsen area. If you click the two arrow thingies on the upper middle of the page where 3月 is it'll change the time table for following month

http://www.airportliner.net/timeSelect.php?li=5&da=1

Idk if the link updated for October, but there is a timetable, so I guess it runs? I haven't heard of Nyuuto Onsen closing during the winter so I guess the buses would still run too.

I also don't know if they are necessary, but there is a number for reservations on the top of the page 018-867-7444

Nyuto Onsen (Tsurunoyu Onsen) 2015/3/15 15:03
Thanks Ben and Uji.

Is there a direct bus from Nyuto Onsen to Akita city instead ?
(we are now thinking of spending a night in Akita city)
I cannot seem to find the the bus timetable for such a route.

Does anyone have the link for the cruise timetable at Lake Tazawa ?
Is the bus timetable between Nyuto Onsen and Lake Tazawa as below :
http://www.airportliner.net/timeSelect.php?li=5&da=1
Are there any other buses plying the route as the one above is very infrequent.

I need to work out if I am able to do a cruise at Lake Tazawa and then get back to Nyuto Onsen for a bit of onsen hopping within a day.

Also, what is the speciality about the Honjin rooms (本陣) at Tsurunoyu Onsen ?
Apparently there are a few different room categories there :
- 本陣
- 新本陣・東本陣 (with or without a hearth)
Any advantages with having a hearth in room ?

Thanks.
