JP rail pass with my itinerary? 2015/3/25 06:31
Hi,

I've used Hyperdia and it seems it isn't cost effected for me to get a 2 week rail pass (£250). Can someone check if I am correct as I want to make certain I haven't made a mistake in costing the journey.

I would really appreciate your help.

Narita to Tokyo
Tokyo to Hakone (romance train?)
Hakone to Kyoto
Kyoto to Toyama
Toyama across alpine route to Matsumoto
Matsumoto to Tokyo
Tokyo to Narita

Also does my itinerary look ok?

Thanks

How many days have you allocated for Kyoto , Toyama and Matsumoto slots?

More details will be required for better opinions.

I assume:
1- You will enter and leave from Narita.
2- You will have 16 days in Japan (Not counting flying days?).

Questions:
1 - Do plan to buy a JR Rail Pass? 14-day pass can work by careful rearranging days.
2 - Three full days in Matsumoto? One night should be enough.
3 - Two full days in Toyama? One night should be enough.

Hi Dick H

Thanks for your reply,

Yes we arrive and leave at Narita. We land on 12th at around 9am and fly on 27th at around 9am.

I wasn't planning on buying a JP railpass because when I worked out the prices on Hyperdia it seemed cheaper to buying the individual train tickets because of the amount of time we spend in place I suppose, but I wanted to check with someone if Hyperdia is accurate and if I'd worked them out correctly.

The reason for 3 days in Matsumoto is because I wanted to do the Alpine crossing (I heard its quite good?) which gets us to Matsumoto on 22nd in the evening, 23rd we are going to kamikochi because apparently its beautiful? and 24th we will look around Matsumoto and then leave for Tokyo.

This sound any good?

Thanks
Richard

Narita airport to Tokyo round trip

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2359_nex.html

4000 yen

Odawara to Kyoto via Kosei line to Kanazawa to Toyama

http://goo.gl/B8CB39

10150 (fare) + 8590 yen (Seat fee) = 18740 yen

You can use your base fare ticket for 5 days.

Shinano-Omachi to Matsumoto to Shinjuku

http://goo.gl/GFw6V3

4750 (fare) + 2900 (seat fee) = 7650 yen

You can use your base fare ticket for 3 days.

Total 4000+18740+7650=32680 yen

Japan rail pass 14 days

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.html

46390 yen

So in your case, normal ticket is cheaper.

Romance car from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto and the Alpine route are not JR line so you must pay for them separately.

Sorry, I forgot to consider your traveling time is 16 days which exceeds the limit of Nex round trip ticket. You might better consider Keisei Skyliner & Tokyo subway ticket. As far as I understand, this ticket is valid for 6 months.

Sorry again.

Odawara-Kyoto-Toyama

Take route 1.

When you buy the ticket, please specify the train route: Odawara (via Shinkansen) Kyoto (via Kosei line) Kanazawa (via Hokuriku Shinkansen) Toyama. Once you buy the ticket, you can not change your route.

Since your flight is at 0900, you should be at Narita by 0700. I suggest you stay at Nippori and take the Keisei Skyliner. It's about 40 minutes to Narita from Nippori.
Skyliner 1, 0603 - 0642
Skyliner 3, 0635 - 0714
The Sunny hotel is right beside the station, the Tokiwa is just a 2 minute walk and the Lungwood is about a 5 minute walk.

Yes, Hyperdia is accurate.
NOTE: The Sunny takes cash only.
