I have a Japanese phone with Softbank and i leave to the states. No contract phones payed off. Would i be able to switch out the SIM card with a stateside SIM

softbank phones are locked to softbank carrier. that mean it won't work with other carrier sim card, simlock. so most probably you can't use your softbank phone with US carrier simcard.

What phone model and where did you buy it?
It depends where you bought your phone, but unless you bought it unlocked then you probably can not use it with a US sim. However, from May it may be possible to unlock Softbank phones under certain circumstances. Are you travelling or moving and when are you leaving?
