Cities similar to Yufuin

Hi, I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on cities that are similar to Yufuin? I have been there two times and enjoy the hot springs as well as the concentrated walkable area with local shops and restaurants. I usually go to a ryokan that has a bookable private onsen as my wife is too shy to go to public ones.
I have been to Beppu, which I didn't enjoy as much as things were spread out and seemed a bit built up. I have also been to Hakone, and that while the course was nice, I rather go to a place where I can walk around and browse shops/restaurants and nature.
Thanks!

Yufuin is somewhat unique. A strange mix of "traditional onsen resort for the old men" and "trendy shopping resort for the young girls". I can't think of any other resort that is too similar. Usually it is either or. Kurokawa comes somewhat close, although it misses the shopping. And there aren't many restaurants: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4575.htmlKusatsu Onsen is increasingly attractive to visitors who do not want to eat dinner at their ryokan. There are also lots of shops: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7400.html

If onsen is a priority I would also suggest Kinosaki. If not and just interested in walking around town among small and interesting shops consider Kurashiki or Otaru in Hokkaido.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I will read up more on Kurashiki and Kinosaki as it is most convenient to other locations I plan on going.
My wife enjoys the small shops to browse between going to an onsen, so I would say the small interesting shops to look at is more important than a nice onsen. I forgot to add I much rather go somewhere by train rather than bus, as I am quite tall and find Japanese buses very uncomfortable, so some of the other good suggestions are probably out for me.
Thanks!
