Dewa Sanzan - Bus or Car? 2015/5/9 02:24
Hi All,

I'm just after peoples opinions.

At the moment, I'm currently planning on visiting Haguro-san, Yudono-san and the two temples near Yudono-san which has the mummified monks.

My original plan was to spend half a day at Haguro-san (via bus) from Tsuroka, along with a fully day trip visiting Yudono-san and the two other temples via bus.

However, it seems as though there is only a 2-3,000 yen difference in hiring a car (with petrol) for a day and the bus fares over two days.

Any advice on which method of transport you think is better will be appreciated....

If you used to driving a car, I recommend you to go by car.
There is 「TOYOTA Rent-A-Car」in Tsuruoka.
https://rent.toyota.co.jp/eng/

「By Bus」
「鶴岡」Tsuruoka (9:17, 11:35, 15:05)→30min→「東橋」→20min→「大網」→30min→「湯殿山」Yudonosan
東橋→15min, on foot→本明寺(Honmyouji)
大網→7 or 25min, on foot→
→大日坊(Dainichibou) or 注連寺(Churenji)
※ The mummified monks are called Sokushinbutsu.

Thanks for the update.

Normally, I like catching public transport in Japan but I've decided that sometimes more rural areas need a car. As such, I've booked a car for 2 nights and will be staying at a more rural location which should be nice.

Thanks for the advice.
