Hi there, I'm going to visit Japan in January and I'd like to trek on mt.Zao, but I don't see the bus schedule running in December-March. So I wonder if the mountain is closed during winter or if it's not, then how could I get there by public transportation.

The road is closed, and it is not possible for the general public to see the crater in winter. See the basics here:

Instead, it may be possible to see "snow monsters" there.
