Okinawa, where to find star-shaped sand 2015/7/22 13:15
Where to find the star shaped sand in Okinawa? Is it in all the beaches? Naha?

No these day's its virtually gone. You can still find some on Iriomote's Hoshizuna no Hama (Star sand beach) and of course buy souvenirs of it in small vials, but note that the star sand that is sold as souvenirs is actually harvested in China.

Two years ago we visited Taketomi-jima, and star-shaped sand
was still plentiful in one of the beach nearest to Ferry terminal.

Thanks for the replies.
I think you just saved me a trip to Ishigawa for this vacation.
I may go next time.

I went to Hoshizuna no Hama (Iriomote) and Taketomi Island in August 2013 and could find star-shaped sand. I head to search a bit, but it was definitely there.

Sorry, maybe I need to clarify what I meant about the star-shaped sand being virtually gone. Apparently in the past it used to completely cover some of the beaches, but these days you have to look hard to find it. So, yes it is still there but nowhere near to what it used to be.

Also, I wouldn't let that discourage you from taking a trip to Ishigaki. The star-shaped sand is a curiosity, but not something I'd schedule a trip around myself. Plus the Yaeyama islands are quite amazing in and of themselves.
