How to know a train is cancelled? 2015/7/31 20:09
Hi,
I know long range trains can be cancelled because of typhoons or landslides.

Is there any page where to find out if a train is cancelled if I know there is an oncoming typhoon?

How long before departure would I be able to know?

In my case I might use one of the night trains, if it is cancelled, I need to find other transport options / accommodations. If I get information when arriving on the station an hour before departure I would be stuck, not a very good feeling.

Almost all railway companies publish information about their current state of service to their websites. Mostly in Japanese only, but some even in English. So, check the websites!

JR East and JR West have English information on the state of their services:

These decisions are made relatively short-term, depending on actual numbers, such as the amount of rainfall and wind speed. It is quite difficult to predict. Not all typhoons cause train service to be interrupted. Some weaker ones do not.

In case of night trains, decisions are usually made a little earlier in advance.

If it is the Sunrise Seto/Izumo, you will find its state on the following page:
