Going to Okayama and Kyoto

Hello everyone,
I'm in Tokyo by now, and want to go to Okayama and Kyoto. I know both can be reach with the Shikansen but it's quite expensive.
So, do somebody know an another way as using bus, trains, ...? (even by night)
