Day trip to Hakone 2015/8/6 21:23
Hi,

I am planning a day trip from Tokyo to Hakone with 2 young children. What would you suggest that we go to? We will be driving from Tokyo and maybe park our car somewhere to take the tozan train. Apart from this, I am not sure what we should do?

First thing I would do is check the current travel advice for the area, as a volcanic activity warning had restricted access to certain areas recently. I know the ropeway was shut down for a period - perhaps still is?

Keep in mind that the Hakone Ropeway isn't currently operating due to a no entry zone around Owakudani due to the volcanic activity.

You can take the Tozan Railway though from Hakone Yumato to Gora Station and then transfer onto a substitute bus service (that's covered under the Hakone Free Pass) from Gora Station to Togendai Station. From there you can travel across Lake Ashi (which offers views of Mt.Fuji) on sightseeing boats that look like pirate ships to either Hakone Machi or Moto-Hakone. The children might also be interested in the Hakone Checkpoint which is within easy walking distance from either of these destinations.

You mentioned about driving from Tokyo. Have you also considered using the train? You can purchase the Hakone Free Pass for travel between Shinjuku and Hakone Yumato.

I recommend doing the Hakone Round Course: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5210.html
Remember that the ropeway is closed and you'll have to use the substitute bus between Gora & Todendai

I nearly forgot to mention the hot springs... If this is something that interests you then I recommend Hakone Yuryo. They offer a free shuttle bus to and from Hakone Yumato Station and its a great way to end your day. And they are family friendly with private baths so you can bathe together.
