Routes for climbing Mt. Hiei

Planning to climb Mt. Hiei. Which side is more convenient to reach from Kyoto station/Gojo Station - Sakamoto or Yase (Kyoto)?
Also, have heard that the traditional route is a convenient path of mossy steps known as Honzaka (本坂), starting from Sakamoto. But there are also many other routes, with numerous small temples and waterfalls along the way, where as signposting (even in Japanese) is lacking.
Could you advice where and how to find these routes? Anyone has climbed any of them?
Coming down - which cable car brings to more convenient place to go back to Gojo/Kyoto station?
