Autumn leaf season is a big thing. Also Japan has seen a huge increase in tourism in the past year, things are getting booked out very quickly.
Try rakuten or jalan for places that might not be listed on other sites like booking.com.

On that note, those have been exactly my thoughts for a while now, but now I'm starting to wonder if there are any hard numbers on this perceived increase.

How come Tokyo is booked out from October almost through November?? Some hotels could be? But whole Tokyo? You'd better check again . I just had a look at business hotels, Toyoko inns, plenty rooms are still available in many of their Tokyo hotels.

@ girltokyo
Thank you!! I have been trying to explain this to some posters over the last few months.
@ Faiyez
The main reasons for the significant increase in tourists are the weak yen and a relaxation of visa requirements for visitors from other Asian countries, especially China. Indeed, visitors from China comprise the highest number of tourists to Japan.

I will be in Japan from 13-29th October. Not really staying in Tokyo more than one or two days (booked one already). But in case of plan interruptions I want to stay near Tokaido area to reach airport in Nagoya. So I am a little worried I might be out of room in the area.
Just until a few weeks ago most Toyoko Inn were non booked but looking at the most seem booked out. Even Nagoya and down to Kagoshima is starting to book out (mostly weekend but anyway).
If I need to stay for several days Id rather not move around from hotel to hotel. It happened once before and I hate hauling lugguage through Tokyo.
Reason for staying in Tokyo is that I will visit north.

You must be doing something wrong, there are many available rooms in Tokyo even for the entire period of Oct 13-29.

Yesterday I booked a week at the beginning of November without problem. I also have three or four other bookings in place (done recently). Are you restricting your price and location too aggressively? (although I have a hotel for Y67,000 for six nights and it's still pretty nice).

I probably have done something wrong. Where do you find hotels? Is it in Tokyo central or outside? Just curious.

Booking.com has many rooms left in central Tokyo, Rakuten Travel has even more. That's all we can say unless you tell us more precisely what you want (date, location, price, maybe type of hotel, etc.). Conventional tourist hotels in central Tokyo may be quite expensive, for example.

Thank you for your reassurance.
Well since I will probably fly or take an early train long way I try to stay near east part of Tokyo. Well I guess. I try to stay below 7000 JPY a night but a simple capsule would do if others are out.

For your entire stay (Oct 13-29, 16 nights), rooms in standard hotel chains such as APA can be booked for about 140-150,000 yen, so that's slightly over 7000 yen per night but still acceptable I guess. Most are available on Japanese Rakuten Travel, but there are also some on the English one (Booking.com on the other hand is much more expensive). There are also a couple lower-end hotels with private rooms, and a lot of capsule hotels. http://travel.rakuten.com/ghotel/list/Japan-Tokyo_Prefecture/JP_JP-13/...
