Tobu Nikko pass worthwhile for us? 2015/10/20 03:34
Hi,

We're going to Japan next week (for 5 weeks). Looking forward to that very much!
We already have a 21 day JR pass, but we will activate that once we're leaving Nagano (too bad there isn't a 28 days one).
We are trying to decide if we want to buy a Tobu Nikko 2 day pass (we don't necessarily want to go back all the way to Tokyo if that's not necessary). We are staying in Kinugawa Onsen (Hotel Ootaki) and will be staying there for 2 nights. Do you think it's worthwhile to buy the pass?
Can we use the train between Kinugawa Onsen and Nikko for free (it seems like this on the Japan Guide website but it's unclear on the http://www.tobu.co.jp/foreign/pass/2day_nikko_pass.html website)?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Tim

Have you confirmed that 21-day Japan Rail Pass will pay off in this journey?
(Adding up JR fees by leg does not always make the total JR cost.)

Do you think it's worthwhile to buy the pass?

Which sites in Nikko City do you plan to visit?

If you make a roundtrip by Tobu lines from Asakusa Station to Kinugawa-onsen Station within two calendar days, Tobu 2-day Nikko Pass pays off.
The Tobu basic fares for this roundtrip are at around 3100 yen per adult, while a Tobu 2-day Nikko Pass is sold at 2670 yen.

Please note that the first Tobu ride with a Tobu 2-day Nikko Pass should be made from Asakusa Station; the holder of this pass has to visit Asakusa Station even when the place which he/she starts from is much closer to another Tobu Station.

Can we use the train between Kinugawa Onsen and Nikko for free?

The latter Tobu station is Tobu-nikko station; for distinction from Nikko Station of JR, "Tobu" is used in the name.

A Tobu 2-day Nikko Pass allows its holder to take Local, Section Rapid and Rapid trains freely on Tobu-nikko -- Shimo-imaichi -- Kinugawa-onsen -- Shin-fujiwara.

In order to take a Tobu Limited Express train, a passenger should pay a Limited-Express surcharge and get issued a separate ticket.
A holder of a Tobu 2-day Nikko Pass is given a discount by 20 percent on a Limited-Express surcharge for any ride on a route where the pass is valid.

A Tobu regular (i.e. before-discount) Limited-Express surcharge for a one-way ride from Asakusa to Kinugawa Onsen is at 1030 to 1440 yen; the amount depends on days and time zones.

Currently only one through train is available in a day between Kinugawa-onsen and Tobu-nikko Stations in each direction; you need to change trains at Shimo-imaichi Station in most cases.
