Alpene Route in November 2015/11/8 01:59
We are planning to visit Alpene route on 21st Nov. We are a couple with 2 year old kid. Initially we planned to stay at Toyama or Tateyama and make a round trip on Alpene route(Tateyama-Murodo-Ogizawa).But from their website,I understand Tateyama to Murodo route "may be" suspended if there is heavy snowfall; This leads our plan to be in a confusion.Whether to
stay in Toyama/Tateyama and continue the trip as planned. For this, entire alpene route shud be open,Tateyama-murodo shud not be closed which we cant tell for sure. After lot of thinking, I am thinking of the below plan.Plz suggest whether it will work good or any other suggestion will be appreciated .

*** Book a hotel in toyama or Tateyama (which one will be preferred)
If Tateyama-Murudo route is open for travel :
------------------------------------------------------------
1. Leave Tokyo on 21st early morning and catch the first train to
Tateyama.Check in hotel, drop the baggage and start alpene route round trip (full route - Tateyama-Murudo-Ogizawa-Murodo-Tateyama)or 2.Leave Tokyo on 21st early morning and catch the first train to Ogizawa.Carry the baggage and start the alpene route(full route-one way) - Finish the trip at Tateyama and check in hotel
3.Leave next day morning and travel to Takayama.

If Tateyama-Murudo route is NOT open for travel :
---------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Leave Tokyo on 21st early morning and catch the first train to
Ogizawa.Carry the baggage and start the alpene route - round trip (Ogizawa to Murodo to Ogizawa)
5.Travel back from Ogizawa to Toyama/Tateyama and check in hotel and stay over night - Is there any way to travel skipping alpene route ? How long will it take ?

As a couple with a kid,I wish to make advance booking for hotel and have everything well planned. What wud be the best bet considering alpene route in Nov ?

I remember you wrote in the other thread you will land Narita at 1900, 20th, and you are vegetarian.

Travelling in Japan as vegetarian is not so easy, especially in countryside, since vegetarian restaurants are very rare in Japan: safest bet will be finding Indian restaurants which are very common in cities like not only Tokyo but also Nagano, maybe, however smaller towns tend not to have vegetarian (including Indian) restaurants.

The next point is that late November is the most crowded season in Kyoto (and thus also nearby cities like Osaka). Tokyo is always crowded, especially in Saturdays and the day before holidays.

So, my recommendations are as follows.

Nov. 20th Narita. Your flight might delay, but even in this case, you can get there easily by using the shuttle bus. The hotel price is much cheaper than in central Tokyo. You will be able to have vegetarian meal in Narita AP, though there are not so many vegetarian/vegan friendly places.

Nov. 21st Nagano

Buy Japan Rail Pass 7 days for two adults and activate it on 21st Nov. Your child do not need to buy tickets. Stay in nearby Nagano station. Send baggage with Takkyubin to hotel in Nagoya.

Nov. 22nd Toyama.
If weather permits, take bus to Ogisawa and then do Alpine route. If the weather is not good for the mountain travel, take Shinkansen to Kanazawa and see the city of Kanazawa and then go back to Toyama. Stay at Toyama.

Nov 23rd. Nagoya
Take train to Takayama. If time permits, round trip bus to Shirakawa-go. Train to Nagoya and stay there. At this time, you will have very scarce chance to get nice rooms in Kyoto in an affordable price. But in Nagoya there are many.

Nov. 24-26

Sightseeing in Kyoto, using Hikari shinkansen from/to Nagoya. If you have JR pass, the shinkansen rides are free of charge.

Nov. 27
Further sightseeing in Kyoto or go to Tokyo. The end of the JR Pass.
