Tokyo Itinerary, Feedback 2015/11/20 15:56
Anybody who can give some feedback in our itinerary?
It is kinda tricky since we will be there from Dec 31 to Jan 7 so a lot of places(museums/gardens) in Tokyo are closed for the New Year weekend.

Dec 31 (Thursday)
Narita arrival 1035H
Walk to Skytree in the late afternoon
Kaminarimon gate / Nakamise
Go to Sensoji, wait until midnight for the bell to be rung 108 times

Jan 1 (Friday)
Sumida river transport to Odaiba
Aquacity / Decks / Palette Town

Jan 2 (Saturday)
Imperial Palace for the Emperor's New Year greeting
Ginza
Koishikawa Korakuen
Tokyo Dome
Tokyo Tower

Jan 3 (Sunday)
Travel to Minakami
Rotenburo at Takaragawa onsen

Jan 4 (Monday)
Cable ride at Tenjin ski resort
Back to Tokyo around lunch
Ueno Park (National Museum)
Akihabara
Shiodome Winter Lights

Jan 5 (Tuesday)
Meiji
Harajuku
Shibuya
Shinjuku

Jan 6 (Wednesday)
Tsukiji
Disney (still deciding if land or sea)

Jan 7
Flight back 1145H

In the tsukiji info page, it says it is sometimes close on Wed. Where do I get the actual info for this? Please help.

Thanks.

Emperor's New Year Greeting.
I went on the last emperor's 85th birthday. The lines were long with huge crowds, but it was orderly. I remember, and understood only his first word, "Kyowa" (Today). It was quite impressive and I am very glad I went.
New Years Eve at the temple will be memorable, but very crowded.

Thank you for the calendar!

And yeah I expect it to be a memorable and great experience, spending New Year in Tokyo.

On Jan 5, if the sky would be clear, go to Tocho (Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building) in Shinjuku first in the morning (9:30-). Mt. Fuji would be shining with snow reflecting the morning daylight.

Although I haven't attended for many years, the Tokyo Fire Department puts on a huge New Years display, usually on the waterfront at Harumi. It will likely be on Jan 2 or 3.

@Luisjp Hey thanks for the suggestion. I was just thinking of doing that for the city lights so I put it at night. If we can wake up and travel early, we might do this, weather permitting.

@Dick H Thanks for putting the pic. I was expecting a fireworks display haha. I guess I need to check the schedule for this and see if it'll work out with our current plans.

The 2016 "Dezomeshiki" is on 6 Jan at Tokyo Big Sight. You can enter as early as 8:00. The opening parade starts at 9:22. The ceremony begins at 9:30.

The Big Sight side says the event lasts between 9:00-14:00. Admission free.

It might be a choice between your Tsukiji and Disney plans. Or, rearrange your Jan 1 and Jan 6 contents.

For the city lights, I believe Tokyo Tower is the best. It is in the center of Tokyo lights. Skytree (east) and Shinjuku (west) are somewhat off the center. I prefer to visit these in the daytime.

Hey thanks for all the info!

Sadly, I cannot put disney into a different day since that day is the least crowded from the crowd forecast.

It's good to have a backup plan tho just in case.

Re. Tokyo Tower. A good place to see it is from the 40th floor of the World Trade Center at the JR HAMAMATSUCHO station. The Tokyo Monorail also starts from the 3rd floor.
You need to go down to 1F or lower to the express elevators to the Observation Floor. There are signs in English.
The WTC is about 800 meters from Tokyo Tower.

Tokyo City View is actually in the heart of the central triangle (Tokyo - Shinjuku - Shinagawa).

Re: Tokyo Itinerary, Feedback 2015/11/25 19:18
i would second the tokyo metropolitan government for your city overlook. it's free, and often not very crowded if you hit a good day (i've been there three times with tourist friends, and never once waited in line). the views are great, and you aren't paying for them. it's very easy to get to on the oedo subway line; get off at tochomae, and you are basically in the basement of the building itself.

This forum just keeps on giving. Haha. Thanks for all the replies. I am taking note of everything.

I was planning to alight at Shinjuku for the Gov't building, but I guess Tochomae is better.
