How do I get insurance when I am between jobs 2015/11/24 15:47
How do I apply for health insurance while I'm between jobs in Japan?

Is it more expensive, etc?

Thank you!

If you have been on your employer's health insurance scheme, and if you leave the company, you should receive from your former employer stating that you are leaving the company's scheme as of such and such date. You take that paper to city hall (where they have social insurance department) and enroll in the "national" health insurance scheme.

There are 2 ways you can select.

1) National health insurance

2) Continue social health insurance of your previous company
Ask your health insurance association.

Whichever you select, insurance fee will be roughly double because when you are working for a company your employer pays half of your insurance fee.
