I've heard the 18-300 lens isn't all that good. I thought about it, since I had an 18-140 and a 55-300. I bought the 28-300 as it's a better lens. The prices in Map Camera and Yodobashi are cheaper than in Amazon US due to the favorable exchange rate. Look up those sites on Google.

And yes, it does fit the D5300, which is what I have. But I also have a D7200 and I'll be using it on that one and will have the D5300 for my Tamron 10-24 and my prime 50 f/1.8.

It's roughly 70,000 yen online, 80,000 yen in retail stores.

Yes, as an AF-S lens it will work fine on that camera.

I've heard the 18-300 lens isn't all that good. I thought about it, since I had an 18-140 and a 55-300. I bought the 28-300 as it's a better lens.

The 18-300 is a better choice for a superzoom for a crop sensor camera if you only have one lens. The 28-300 may be slightly better optically, but the major trade off is that you'll lose 18-28mm on the wide end. Not a problem if you also carry a 10-24, but hugely disadvantageous to those who want a superzoom to cover everything.

The OP doesn't explain their situation, but if I I were to get one lens then I'd want something from the 18mm on range, (18-135, 18-140, 18-200, 18-300, etc.).

The 28-300mm lens is a better lens(on a D5300) mainly because it was designed for a Full Frame sensor, and the image softness towards the edges is cropped out of the image on the D5300 . It will be heavy as well.

I agree that 28-300mm is not the best zoom range on the D5300, as its equivalent wide end is not really wide on a crop sensor. (will look like a 42mm lens on a FF camera)
