Okuhida winter illumination

I plan to have a day trip to Okuhida on 22-Jan-16 and I will be taking a bus from Takayama bus station.
Can I buy the bus ticket on that morning or must I get the bus ticket early?
Beside visiting the Shinhokota Ropeway wonder will there be any winter illumination? or any spot within Okuhida that I must see/visit? if yes, any direction as how should I walk/travel around in Okuhida, via bus? as I understand there are a few onsen towns.
