Travel to Tokyo/Ashikaga and Saitama 2016/1/18 11:05
Hello,
We are planning to visit Tokyo from May 11 to May 15, 2016 to mainly view the flower garden in Ashikaga ans Saitama. Can you help me with the following questions:
1. Should we get the hotel in Tokyo for the duration of the trip and travel to the other locations by train or bus daily?
2. How many days should we spend in Ashikaga?
3. Should we go to Ashikaga by train or by bus from Tokyo?

Sincerely yours
Paul

Even though public transport is good around Tokyo, getting to Ashikaga in Tochigi-ken and Hitsujiyama in Saitama by train or bus will take a lot of time if you're staying in a hotel in Tokyo.

I would look for a hotel in Ashikaga for a couple of nights to see the gardens there and then move to a hotel in Chichibu, to be close to the gardens there. Both places can be accessed by train. Trains are generally easier than buses around the Kanto as they aren't slowed by traffic and stations are well labeled. Takasaki might be a place to stay between the two as a compromise. It's one stop out on a limited stop Joetsu Shinkansen toward Nagano.

The Ashikaga garden with the fuji (wisteria) is within walking distance of Tomita Station on the JR Ryomo line. Chichibu is on the Seibu-Ikebukuro line (Ikebukuro to Chichibu) and the Chichibu line (Kumagaya to Chichibu). Hitsujiyama Park is about a 15 minute walk from Seibu-Chichibu Station or Ohanabatake Station on the Chichibu Line.
