How to Get from Osaka to Nagaoka?

Would anyone be able to tell me how I might be able to get from Osaka to Nagaoka, preferably as cheaply as possible? I'm going to Japan for the first time on a working holiday, hopefully for three months; and I intend to be staying in Osaka; but I want to visit a friend in Nagaoka for maybe a few days some time before I have to go home. How difficult/expensive will this be? Thanks.
