Arashiyama full day itinerary

Hello all! We planned on doing the itinerary posted on this site: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3950_arashiyama_full.htmlBut after closer inspection I noticed this person rented a bike. Is it possible to do all this on foot? Also. is it a good idea to first take the JR train all the way to Umahori station to take the Sagano Scenic railway back to Arashiyama station? The website suggests to do the opposite, but in my mind I thought this would be nicer. Does it go in both directions? Thanks!

If you want good photos of the cherry blossoms at Daikaku-ji, you need to get there between 10AM and Noon. If so, take the train as early as possible, then come back to Saga Arashiyama (Scenic Train terminal) and take a taxi to Daikaku-ji and start your walk there. Also, just before you get to Gio-ji, on the right is a path leading up to a former emperors tomb. Very interesting. Here are my photos of the area, taken April 2, 2014. http://dickh.zenfolio.com/f822551816

Thanks! Unfortunately we'll be just missing the cherry blossoms. I'm just finishing up school end of April. So we're going in May after Golden Week.
