Rail Pass (Kansai Region) 2016/3/15 11:42
Hello!

I am extremely confused on which is the best rail pass deal for my stay in Japan. Ill be arriving in around 9pm to Kansai Airport and traveling to my hotel Hearton Hotel Minamisenba. I will be using Osaka as my main hub for 7 nights, and will be taking day trips to the surrounding Kansai region (Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, etc). I would like to ask what is the best rail pass deal for my stay? Possibly looking for one that I can purchase to use to get from the airport as well. Thank you!

This website has a comprehensive list of rail passes, sorted by region - start there. When you find one you think might work, check that it pays off by doing the following:

1. Find the train fares on Hyperdia (hyperdia.com/en).
2. Add all the fares together.
3. Compare the total cost to the cost of a rail pass.

Re: railway fees and timetables 2016/3/15 15:08
JR companies will soon revise train timetables on 2016/03/26.
HyperDia is currently not reflecting the new data.

Please note that summing up JR fees by legs does not always make the JR fees for the whole route.

In this journey, you are likely to make mostly short-distance railway legs for which you should pay fees separately, in which case you can calculate the total railway cost by summing up the fees; however, if you do this calculation for JR long-distance legs, you may come to a wrong conclusion as if a rail pass could save your cost, because lower fees may apply to successive legs or rides.

Thank you for your replies. One more question. Once you are in a major city is it easy to walk around or you must take trains to different parts of the city? For example Osaka area? Or Kyoto area?

I would like to ask what is the best rail pass deal for my stay?

That depends on your destinations, but for your trips from Osaka to Nara, Kyoto and Kobe Cities, I suppose a JR-West Kansai Area pass or a Kansai Thru Pass does not easily save your cost much.

When will you travel?
Which sites to visit do you have in mind?

Once you are in a major city is it easy to walk around or you must take trains to different parts of the city?

Well, it sounds better to take a bus or train to go between different parts of Nara, Kyoto, Kobe or Osaka City.

[Nara City]

In Nara City, a good walker may walk from Nara Station (of JR) or Kintetsu-nara Station to Nara Park and nearby spots such as Todaiji (temple); to visit also spots in other districts, for example Kasuga Taisha (shrine) and Yakushiji (temple), bus is convenient.

A Nara Bus 1-Day Pass (sold at 500 yen) is useful to visit these spots; it pays off when you have three or more bus rides in one day.
http://www.narakotsu.co.jp/language/en/free-ticket/index.html#pass-1da...

1980 yen = 2 x (180 + 560) yen on railway + 500 yen for a bus pass.
Your hotel --Walking--
Nagahoribashi Station (K16)
| [180 yen; Subway Sakaisuji Line]
(K17) Nippombashi Station --Short transfer--
Kintetsu-nippombashi Station
| [560 yen; Kintetsu lines: Express or Rapid Express for Nara]
Kintetsu-nara Station.

[Kyoto City]

In Kyoto City, it may be easy to walk in one or a few neighboring districts which are between the two major roads (e.g. the east-west Shijo-dori, the north-south Karasuma-dori), while bus is usually convenient to go across major roads.

A Kyoto City Bus & Kyoto Bus One-day Pass (sold at 500 yen), which is valid inside the 230-yen flat-fare zone, is useful to visit many sightseeing spots.

2100 yen = 2 x (240 + 560) yen on railway + 500 yen for a bus pass.
Your hotel --Walking--
Shinsaibashi Station (M19)
| [240 yen; Subway Midosuji Line]
(M16) Umeda Station: Exit 9 --Short transfer--

Osaka Station
| [560 yen; JR Kyoto Line: Rapid or Special Rapid]
Kyoto Station: West Gate.

Kyoto Tourist Information Center (open from 08:30 to 19:00) is in Kyoto Station Building, along the north-south bridge of Kyoto Station, near the west gate.
Kyoto City Bus & Subway office is in the bus ticket center in front of the central gate of Kyoto Station.

[Kobe City]

In Kobe City, major sightseeing spots are located in multiple districts (as in Kyoto City); it may be too far to walk from a spot in one district to a spot in another district.
Depending on your sites to visit, bus or railway is more convenient.

Buses on City Loop can bring you to various spots in Kobe City.
(The route of City Loop bus is partly complicated, so I recommend you would consult with the staff at Kobe Information Center which buses you should take.)
A one-day pass (sold at 660 yen) pays off when you have three or more bus rides in one day on this bus line, where neither a Kansai Thru Pass nor IC cards are accepted.

1960 yen = 2 x (240 + 410) yen on railway + 660 yen for a bus pass.
Your hotel --Walking--
Shinsaibashi Station (M19)
| [240 yen; Subway Midosuji Line]
(M16) Umeda Station: Exit 9 --Short transfer--

Osaka Station
| [410 yen; JR Kobe Line: Rapid or Special Rapid]
Sannomiya Station: East Gate.

Kobe Information Center (open from 09:00 to 19:00) is near the east gate of Sannomiya Station (of JR).

[Osaka City]

In Osaka City, except when you walk around a few stations located close to each other, probably railway is more convenient.

[Accesses from KIX]

Your hotel Hearton Hotel Minami Senba is located in a block roughly between subway Shinsaibashi and Nagahoribashi Stations, along the east-west Nagahori-dori.

I'll be arriving in around 9 pm to Kansai Airport and traveling to my hotel Hearton Hotel Minami Senba

Hmm..., it seems one easy way is to use Nankai lines and Osaka Municipal Subway Sakaisuji Line, with one transfer in Tengachaya, to Nagahoribashi Station, then walk.

In a case where you can get to a counter of the Nankai Ticket Office in Kansai-airport Station (in KIX Terminal 1) by 22:25, maybe you can purchase there a Kanku Tokuwari Rapi:t Ticket (sold at 1130 yen), which allows you to take a Nankai Limited Express Rapi:t train with your seat reserved; the last Rapi:t train is scheduled to depart at 22:35.

Kansai-airport Station (of Nankai)
| [920 yen / 1430 yen; Nankai Lines: Airport Express / Limited Express]
Tengachaya Station (of Nankai) --Short transfer--
Tengachaya Station (K20)
| [240 yen; subway Sakaisuji Line]
(K16) Nagahoribashi Station --Walking--
Your hotel.

Gates above the underground shopping mall Crysta Nagahori may be already closed when you will arrive to subway Shinsaibashi or Nagahoribashi Station.
I recommend you in advance would ask your hotel how to get from each of the two subway stations to the hotel, informing the staff of your late arrival.
