Koyasan pass in addition to Kansai pass? 2016/3/25 00:23
Hi

this is our itinerary in the Kyoto region :
(our accomodations are already booked in Hakone, Kyoto & Mount Koya as we are travelling in the peak season in August)

day 1 : travel fromTokyo to Hakone (lodging 1 night in Hakone)
day 2 : visit Hakone, travel from Hakone to Kyoto (lodging Kyoto)
day 3 : visit Kyoto / walking or using the bus (lodging Kyoto)
day 4 : visit Nara (lodging Kyoto)
day 5: visit Koyasan (lodging 1 night Mount Koya)
day 6 : return from Mount Koya to Kyoto (lodging Kyoto)
day 7 : visit Himeji (lodging Kyoto)
day 8 : visit Arashyama ((lodging Kyoto)
day 9 : travel from Kyoto to Osaka itami airport (by bus)

Based on previous reactions, we intend to buy :
- a Hakone free pass (5.140 Yens) for 2 days (days 1 & 2)
- a Koyasan world heritage pass ( (3400 Y) for 2 days ( 5 & 6)
- a Kansai Thru pass (4000 Y) for 2 days (7 & 8)

This will not cover
- our trip to Nara (will buy a roundtrip ticket ?)
- nor the buses in Kyoto (will buy a day pass ?) and the bus from Kyoto to Osaka Itami.

Do you think this is OK or do you suggest another alternative ?

Saving money is off course important, but time is also an issue when you only have 2 weeks.
Sometimes it's better to pay a little bit more on transportation but travel faster and save time to visit more places.
I also guess that with a pass you loose less time queuing at the ticket counter every morning.

Any suggestion/advice is welcome !

Day 4 to day 6 Kansai thru pass 3 days (5200 yen).

Koyasan world heritage pass does not cover Kyoto to Namba (around 800 yen one way) while Kansai thru pass covers it. Two day version (4000 yen) and individual tickets from Kyoto to Kintetsu-Nara is slightly cheaper, but with this pass you can take some flexibility: after Nara you can go to Horyuji, Asuka or Osaka.

day 7 Kansai area pass 1 day (JR)

Kyoto to Himeji is a long way and JR is about 60 min faster than non-JR trains.

Day 8 Normal tickets to/from Arashiyama (JR or Hankyu, depending on your accommodation in Kyoto)
