Boarding time in bullet trains 2016/4/3 20:08
I know Japan shinkansen is known for being on time... My family will travel from Osaka to tokyo... For us not to miss our train, allowance in asking questions...How many minutes does one have to be in the station and platform before the departure time?

If you are not familiar with the station, I recommend to arrive there at least 15 minutes in advance. Some of them are huge. Of course, I assume you have your ticket and seat reservation already acquired in advance.

Like any public transport service across the globe. You need to be inside the doors before they close. Be on the platform waiting before the train arrives. Don't be running up the stiars with 30 seconds to go.

I personally like to get to a station with plenty of time to spare. Maybe 30 minutes. Just in case something goes wrong. Which is very rare in Japan.

If you have time to spare on a early arrival. Buy some ekiben/bento, watch some trains, relax and enjoy yourself.

Re: Boarding time in bullet trains 2016/4/4 11:31
I buy my ticket on the day itself and I usually pick the train that is departing at least 30 minutes from now. This gives me time to use the bathroom, pick up food from stalls, navigate to my platform or take pictures with other trains arriving and departing from my platform. Please note that when your ticket says your train is departing at 9:30am, that means your train actually arrives 2-3 minutes before 9:30 and departs exactly at 9:30. I have a friend who got left behind his train because he didn't think the train on the platform was his train.

Yes and no for this.

Yes it will depart exactly at 930 like the example however the 2-3 minutes waiting only applies to starting terminals and when waiting for a faster train to pass. Other stations will only be 1 minute or less.

But yes 15-20 mins would be good so you have enough time to get to your platform/washroom/food

Hope this helps!!
Have fun!!

Why Shinkansen 新幹線(JR's bullet train) ticket(s) purchasing on the day only?
If enter Japan from KIX(except mid night) you should buy at JR ticket office of KIX before.

Reserved seat sales start from one month before.
(in this case No online web for out of Japan)

Transfering at JR Shin-Osaka stn 新大阪駅 (Shinkansen line)
under 10-15 min enough even from Osaka city subway Midosuji line 御堂筋線.

Osaka city subway 地下鉄(chi-ka-tetsu) is not JR's line. (different Railway company).

Dep for Tokyo Shinkansens platform will be No.23 - 27.

Trains waiting time is not same depends on operate plans.
Return trains from East(mostly Tokyo) are longer than
from West Okayama,Hiroshima and Hakata as Sanyo shinkansen train stopping 2 min.

"JR Osaka" is different location also NOT Shinkansen stop stn.
