Takayama to Matsumoto to Shinjuku 2016/4/7 18:08
Hi
Anyone knows if i can buy a bus ticket while in Takayama to get to Matsumoto as i can't seem to locate an online website to purchase this?
And also from Matsumoto to Shinjuku - can i do the same? or i can buy these two at the Narita airport? Could i purchase either one without buying the JR East train pass??

Many thanks
Caroline

You can easily buy a ticket to Matsumoto from the bus depot next to the Takayama train station, no reservation required.

There are also slower buses that have more stops, many of which are worth stopping for - Hirayu Onsen, Shinhotaka ropeway, and kamikochi. Other buses via these are here:

There also seems to be a discount ticket for JR east pass holders:

There are trains to shinjuku from matsumoto - search on Hyperdia. You can buy at any JR train station ticket office, including Narita.

It is not necessary to buy any form of JR pass to buy these, but if you are doing a lot of train travel over a short period it may be worthwhile doing so.
