JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass

The above pass has a condition as follows "However, the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Osaka is not covered". Can some
advise if this means you cannot use the pass to travel from Kyoto
to Osaka (at all) or does it mean you cannot use it on a particular type of train.

The latter. You cannot use the shinkansen. Any other JR train would be okay.
