We will arrive tokyo on October 8. Is it a good program to take the train to Takayama the day after for the festival

That, or the direct Nohi bus. If you go by bus, it would mean that since you are going to attend the festival for the next day or so, you would not be having a JR Travel Pass just sitting in your hotel room.
