That's enough to survive. To have fun... unsure. What is your definition of fun? Partying and drinking the night away. Fine dining of one of Tokyo's Michelin starred restaurants? Two days for Disneyland and Disneysea?

If you live in Australia or the US, 40000 JPY buys about the same as $400, save that you'd eat far better for the same money than you would in Australia, and probably far less than you would in the US. I think you might run a bit short for entertainment, depending on what you want to do.

yes for 1 person eating cheaply (AV 1000 yen per meal, no alcohol) and taking advantage of mostly free activities, but alcohol will add a lot to your bill and even using the train for more than 3 - 4 trips will be 1000 yen.

to travel around tokyo and eat "cheaply" is 2500-3000 yen per day. entry to attractions will make it 3500-4000 yen per day.

if you wanna start day tripping outside of tokyo, then you average daily spend will increase.
