Sapporo to Hakodate

Hi guys! I will be travelling to Sapporo in March (long way to go, I know), but I need to clarify some stuff before I book the hotel. I will be reaching Sapporo on 1/3/17, 11am+. My plan is to travel to Hakodate straightaway. Do I need to purchase the train ticket 1 or 2 days in advance or can I just buy it on the spot? Is there a chance that it is all fully booked?

On the spot is fine. If you can make reservations if you want but there is little point. The seats are all free seating. Sapporo is probably the first station on that line and the seats are for your taking.
There should be sufficient seats.
