Traditional Onsen in Hokkaidou? 2016/5/29 04:58
Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there are any traditional ryokans in the bottom part of hokkaidou/upper part of tohoku. The day prior, we will be in hakodate, but we do not mind traveling a couple hours to reach our destination as we will have JR passes. We will already be staying in nobooribetsu for a night and were also considering toyako, but seeing as the facilities are very similar in terms of modernity we were hoping for a change of pace.

Can anyone recommend a traditional-esc like ryokan with a kaiseki dinner for roughly 15000 yen per person? If nothing like that exists in the area, what is everyones favorite place that sorta meets these qualities, regardless of region?

Thank you everybody!

Northern Tohoku is full of traditional ryokan. One of the best regions in Japan for traditional, rustic onsen. Nyuto Onsen is particularly popular, but there are many more.

Hokkaido's modern development started only a little more than a century ago. As such, it feels less traditional. But there are great onsen resorts in Hokkaido, and many ryokan. I am not sure what your expectations are towards "traditional", but there surely exist many typical ryokan in Hokkaido.

I myself will be staying at the Marukoma Ryokan next month which has a special onsen pool that is located immediately next to and is connected to Lake Shikotsuko:

For something extremely rustic, Aoni Onsen in Aomori is difficult to beat:
