Hi, I'm interested in festivals in Tokyo in August but I discovered that many of them finish at 8-9 pm (in summer time still daylight) I was sure they would last until night because I saw many photos taken in the evening. Anyone can explain that, please? Do you know about festivals that lasts until evening (11-12 for example)?

When I went in Japan ten years ago I clearly remember a matsuri held in the evening in Tokyo in august. So they exist... can you tell me which festivals go on until evening?

LeonGarcia,
Excuse me, but "evening" already starts around 7 pm in Japan as I said; it will be dark by 7, 8 pm! :) Otherwise fireworks will not be visible.

Spain adopts central European time with its base around Berlin, and also with the day light saving time. It means you get up two hours earlier than the rest of the world. Your lunch at 2pm is ours at noon. Moreover, Tokyo is at the east of the base of Japan Standard Time at Akashi near Osaka, while Leon and Galicia is at the west of Madrid, or London, Greenwith. This adds up roughly half hour more. I know the sunset at La Coruna is around 10pm in summer. With this above, Tokyo, somewhat at lower latitude, could be dark around 7pm.
Summer festival, such as Bon Odori, will start around 6pm before getting dark. After some dancing, getting darker, and usually ends up with some fireworks. That might be 8-9pm. As I stated, this numbers would be shifted to 2-3h, to be analog to 10-12pm in Galicia. In another word, we get up 2-3h later in the morning in Japan, compared with in Spain.

Traditional Japanese festivals generally finish till 9 pm. I think reasons are (1) It is loud. most of temple/shrine is placed in the residential area. (2) We, Japanese want to sit down and drink with close friends in some Izakaya after 9 pm before last train.
