Japan 24 day trip itinerary 2016/6/28 15:13
I will be arriving on 30th September in KIX in the evening.
I plan to stay at night at Osaka (Namba) as as I see that Nankai airport train is cheap from KIX-NAMBA station.
the next day, I would go to Nagoya for 2 nights.
My plan for 24-day-trip :
Osaka(1 night) - Nagoya (2nights) - Takayama (Hida) (2nights) - Shirakawago (1 night) - Kanazawa (2nights) - Tateyama alpine route (1 night if possible to stay at campground) - Nagano(Matsomoto)(1 night) - Kawaguchiko (2nights) - Hakone (2nights) - Tokyo (4nights) - Kyoto (2nights) - Kobe (1night) - Osaka ( 3 nights) including Nara day trip - KIX end trip.

I'm planning a trip like this. I'm considering using local train or express buses, buy the Tateyama Kurobe option ticket, etc. instead of getting a JR pass. How do u think? Any advice and suggestion of my itinerary.

Passes seems fine.
I think you should spend more time in Kyoto. Already going to Tokyo and Nagoya so Osaka is lesser of a priority.
Other than that, I would say 4 days in the Fuji area of Fujigoko/Hakone to be too Long as three days is sufficient. There isn't much else to do once you've seen Fuji and visited the hot springs.

I would not move hotels between Kyoto, Kobe, and Osaka on the last part. You can just stay in either Kyoto or Osaka (go by your preference). They are within commuting distance of each other.

I was looking at your question about campground earlier, but couldn't you find something near Toyama station? If you start early from Toyama, you should be able to complete the way through the Alpine Route in one day.

Also I agree with the above posster that probably one night each in Kawaguchiko and Hakone would be enough (unless you want to have the maximum time for good photo opportunity or something :)), and maybe give another day to Kyoto :)

I think the Tateyama/Kurobe option ticket is an add-on for other JR passes. So you have to have a JR pass of some description also.

But their are other stand alone Alpine Route tickets available that are not JR related.

Re: Japan 24 day trip itinerary 2016/6/29 12:23
thank you everyone for the reply and advice.
I will change my plan, and stay more nights in Kyoto.
I was actually also considering going to Shizuoka, seems like I could skip it.
I check the transportation from one place to another by taking local train and buses are a lot cheaper than using JR pass.

For tateyama kurobe option ticket, i think, we could use it w/o the Jr pass if im not mistaken, i will find it out about that.

I would like to stay a night at Kurobe as I really wish to experience the environment there, not just rush for a day trip there.
And I would also prefer to experience different kinds of night life in different cities, kyoto, osaka and kobe.

Would u suggest two nights in Kawaguchiko or two nights in Hakone?

I would really wish to do the camping at campground, but not much info about that I could find.

thank you all again!

Re: Japan 24 day trip itinerary 2016/6/29 13:40
It is an "option" ticket requiring a JR Pass.
http://jrtateyama.com/e/

What is it?
The Tateyama Kurobe Option Ticket is on sale for a limited time as an optional ticket for passengers with any JR Pass (for example, the Hokuriku Arch Pass) for travel to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

You should carry all the staff to the campground, including a tent itself. 500 yen is just for the right to use a place.

I'd just like to point out that Tokyo to Kyoto is 7.5 hours of travel on the only local and rapid trains including transfers.

Thanks again.

Yes, about the camp, I'm just a bit afraid of the temperature. For the backpacks, I could transfer , just carry the important stuffs with me.

And I'm considering local train, domestic or an overnight bus to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto/osaka.

Re: Japan 24 day trip itinerary 2016/6/30 11:54
FYI:

30 Sep 920 KIX -(Nankai)- Nankai Namba

I do not recommend any night buses, losing an opportunity to enjoy the views on the way. You are coming to do sightseeing, aren't you? That is a kind of commuting.

8210 Shinjuku - (JR/day time) - Kyoto, 9 hours, 7 exchanges
? Shinjuku - (night bus) - Kyoto
Cheapest could be 1800(July), 3400(August), 2800(September),
no info yet for October.

Re: Japan 24 day trip itinerary 2016/6/30 16:23
I am now considering to avoid to move from Tokyo to Kyoto directly. You do have an interest in Hakone and Nagoya. Then, why not put these sites between Tokyo and Kansai.

Checking express buses,...

2500 06:30-09:20 Nagoya-Umeda
2550 07:10-09:44 Nagoya-Kyoto
3000 12:00-15:47 Nagoya-Namba
3400 07:30-10:31 Nagoya-Sannomiya

3800 09:40-13:55 Kyoto-Kanazawa
4000 07:20-12:16 Umeda-Kanazawa
4200 08:55-13:02 Kyoto-Takayama
4700 07:50-13:02 Umeda-Takayama
4700 07:35-13:02 Namba-Takayama

and selecting the two most economical ones, the following could be made.

KIX
-(920 yen, 0:51/Nankai)-Osaka/Namba
-(560 yen, 0:54/Kintetsu)-Nara
-(620 yen, 0:42/Kintetsu)-Kyoto
-(3800 yen, 4:15/bus)-Kanazawa
-(1850 yen, 1:15/bus)-Shirakawago
-(2470 yen, 1:07/bus)-Takayama
-(1660 yen, 2:21/JR)-Toyama
-(10850 yen, 7h)-Shinano Ohmachi
-(670 yen, 0:54/JR)-Matsumoto
-(2150 yen, 2:36/bus)-Mt Fuji/Kawaguchiko
-(1750 yen, 1:45/bus)-Tokyo/Shinjuku
-(1184 yen, 1:45/Odakyu)-Hakone Yumoto
-(310 yen, 0:14/Hakone Tozan)-Odawara
-(5080 yen, 4:36/JR)-Nagoya
-(2500 yen, 2:15/bus)-Osaka/Umeda
-(320 yen, 0:40/Hankyu)-Kobe/Sannomiya
-(1130 yen, 2:08/Hanshin+Nankai)-KIX

The last one uses Kanku Access Ticket,

Re: Japan 24 day trip itinerary 2016/6/30 22:41
Hi guys, after referring to your advice, I try to change my route like this, from 30th september-24th October

KIX-OSAKA(2NIGHTS)-NAGOYA(2NIGHTS)-KAWAGUCHIKO(1NIGHT)-HAKONE(1/2NIGHTS)-TOKYO(4NIGHTS)-MATSUMOTO(1NIGHT)- TATEYAMA ALPINE ROUTE(1NIGHT)-TOYAMA/TAKAYAMA(2NIGHTS)-SHIRAKAWAGO(1NIGHT)-KANAZAWA(2NIGHTS)-KYOTO( A FEW NIGHTS)-NARA(DAY TRIP)-KOBE(1 NIGHT)-KYOTO/OSAKA-KIX
Total of 25 days.

Is this better than the previous one? So i need to find out all the available transportation for the route again. If you have info, that would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!
