What to do near port of Hakata? 2016/7/21 02:32
Hi! We will arrive Fukuoka in the morning and board a cruise in the afternoon at the port of Hakata, Fukuoka. However, we have plenty of time before the cruise leaves the port.
- What should we do near the port? Any sightseeing or shopping places or restaurant nearby?
- For luggage, are there lockers nearby?
Thank you.

The Hakata Port Tower is the closest and it is free to go up to the top. It is the old school tower before the Fukuoka Tower in Momochi was put up in 1989.

You don't specifically say how many hours you have in the city. The closest shopping areas are Tenjin which is essentially the downtown part of the city, as well as the Canal City shopping center.

One of the more comprehensive guides to the city is at

One place that is not far and worth seeing is Japan's largest wooden Great Buddha, Tochoji, in the Gion area. It is free and next to the Gion subway station.

You can go to many of the best places in the city by subway, but from the wharf there is no subway station. You can walk it or to save time just grab a taxi and go to Gofukumachi Station. You can get a subway day pass to save money - it is 620 yen for weekdays and 520 yen for weekends.

Get some ramen while you are in town because it is some of the best in Japan.

How are you planning to get to the port?

If your going directly from the train station via a bus or something put bargs in locker at Hakata Station and from there you can do a loop visiting Tocho-ji temple Kushida Shrine and Canal City. You could go to ramen stadium or on your way back to the train station check out some of the best ramen I have had in japan at Ganso Pikaichi (元祖 ぴかいち) and get the wanton ramen. It is so good I keep needing to restrain myself from taking the train from Tokyo there just to grab another bowl.

Thank you all suggestions and ideas. Will arrive Fukuoka airport 9 o'clock. 8 people ( 2 are 80s and 2 chlidren) so will take taxi. Also, try to find place to leave luggages or place near the port ti wander around before boarding a cruise. Afraid of not many lockers for luggages.
