Hi, I am travelling to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima next month and I am wondering if credit cards (Mastercard, Visa) can be used to pay for local trains?

Local trains typically only cost a few hundred yen per trip (depending on how far you're travelling, of course). Why not use an IC card, or change?

For what each journey would cost on local trains, it is not worht your time and effort to buy single tickets using a credit card each time. The fees and charges will add up.
Get a IC card as suggested above. You can use a credit card to purchase these at travel centers. Not sure about machines. But cash is king in public transport. If not most of Japan itself.

Thanks for the reply. I will take your advice and will just use cash on local trains or purchase an IC card. Do I need to purchase one IC card per person?
