Riding along Kamogawa River?

Hi all,
I was planning on riding up and down the Kamogawa, starting from Gion, and have a few questions.
How far south can I go along the river, without using roads? Is it possible to get all the way to Uji?
Well, that was my plan. Ride to Uji and back, preferably via the Sake museums @ Fushimi-ku.
