Hi,
So my original plan had Takayama + Shirakawago on the 30th-31st of December, but I was thinking a lot of things would be closed over new year right? Would it be better to move Takayama and shirakawago to the 28th and spend 29th-31st in kanazawa since it's a bigger city and more things would be likely to be open closer to new year?

Takayama morning market would be closed. Possibly the shops along the historic lane too. Shirakawa-go is mainly just to see the architecture of village homes. There isn't some delicacy or attraction that is a must see. So I say that you can still do Shirakawa-go but not Takayama. Check status for Kenrokuen. It may be closed or may have free entry.
