Travel from Kyoto to Shirakawago 2016/9/23 08:41
We have JR Rail passes. This is our itinerary
Kyoto - Kanawaza-via Thunderbird Shinkansen ( overnight in Kanawaza)
Kanawaza - Shirakawago( Bus)

Shirakawago-Kanawaza - Kyoto

Do we need to purchase a Hokuriku Area Pass?

Hi. Cant help you with your question, sorry, but could I make the suggestion that for the return trip you go Shirakawa - Takayama (bus) - Nagoya (wideview Hida train) - Kyoto (shinkansen). The train trip from Nagoya to Takayama going through the mountains is spectacular - much nicer than the trip from Kyoto to Kanazawa which largely avoids the hills.

Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass fits your itenerary much better than the JR Pass. You did not mention how many days you planned to spend, but Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass is valid for 5 consecutive days only.
