Izakaya chains with English menus? 2016/9/29 02:50
My friend will be coming to Tokyo soon for a week. I've been living here for around six months. I've never really been to any bars here. He really wants to go to an izakaya.

I can read Japanese somewhat okay but struggle with speaking, my friend understands nothing. Where are some places we could go with English menus? Quality of the food is not an issue, only the experience matters to him!

If you are able to some other kinds of chain restaurant recommendations for other categories of Japanese food culture eg sushi, tempura that would be awesome, but izakaya are the main priority!

I don't know much about Izakaya, but for other things there are Matsuya (mostly gyudon, but also other things) and CoCo (mostly curry-rice) that have menus in English.

You have been in Japan for 6 months, and you have not been to an izakaya. Are you serious?

Well, consider this your chance and take the plunge with your friend. Go experience real izakaya.

Order drinks first. While waiting for the beer (or whatever) study the menu or look around and see what others are eating. Then ask the waitress what they are or ask for the same.

You will kick yourself for not trying sooner.

Get a menu, point at want you want. Say the quantity required in Japanese. Use fingers to represent 1, 2, 3 etc.

I know some non-Japanese visitors who cannot read the Japanese language who on every visit go to the Izakaya chain called "Tengu." They have photo menus at least, though whether they have full descriptions in English might depend on the location.
