No JR rail pass will pay itself off. Nagano to Kanazawa will all be non JR trains/buses.

I disagree, I think you can take a 7-day JR pass, starting on the day you go to Nikko, and it will pay off.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen goes from Nagano to Kanazawa just fine with the JR Pass, as I've already done that. You will have to take a bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go at your own expense.

Yes, the pass would pay off for the lat 7 days as AK said.

I am interested to no which trains you thought would be non-JR on the Nagano/Kanazawa/Takayama area as all the ones I usually take are covered by the JR pass. The e7 shinkansen and either Hida or local trains. Certainly the bus is not covered, but they might not use a bus for most of the travel).

I probably should have explained better. The route I suggested in my revised itinerary was Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Takayama, Shirakawago, Kanazawa.

You wont travel on the JR service if you follow this route.

Sure you can use JR services to reach each destination. But you are still gonna have to backtrack and still pay for buses for Kamikochi and Shirakawago. So you are better of busing it in one single direction.

So Tokyo to Matsumoto. Kanazawa to Osaka. Osaka to Tokyo. Worth 29,XXX yen JR pass???

You could use it for Tokyo to Ostuki, but you need to pay another 3350 for Fujikyuko buses and trains. And a Nikko return trip. But also need to pay for the buses separately in Nikko. About 34K yen all up.

fuji shinjuku to kawaguchiko + retro buses 4800
all nikko pass 4500
tokyo to matsumoto 6900
kanazawa to osaka 7600
osaka to tokyo 14000
total = 38K

damn it. i was wrong. haha

Sorry, last response. haha

Just released the Fuji day would not be part of the 7 days pass. So they are practically the same with and without a JR pass by maybe 1000 yen at best.

Purchase pass for convenience. Can be used around Tokyo and Osaka also.

Mt Fuji is in the midway of Tokyo and Matsumoto, latter of which is the "base city" for Kamikochi. So I would suggest the following itinerary.

5-Nov-16 Tokyo city tour , Stay in Tokyo
6-Nov-16 Tokyo
7-Nov-16 Activate Japan Rail Pass 7 days. Nikko day tour, come back to tokyo. Send your big luggage to Kyoto using Ta-Q-Bin.
8-Nov-16 Go to Kawaguchiko (via Otsuki) and then to Matsumoto. If you reach Matsumoto early enough (before 14:30 maybe) you can visit Matsumoto castle.
9-Nov-16 Visit Kamikochi half day and then to Takayama.
10-Nov-16 Takayama in the morning/ Shirakawa- go half day visit then to Kanazawa. Train to Kyoto
11-Nov-16 Kyoto city tour (bamboo Forest , Fushmiri inari shrine) , stay in kyoto
12-Nov-16 Nara day tour , stay in Kyoto
13-Nov-16 Return to tokyo , Take flight back

On 9th and 10th, you will do Matsumoto-Hirayu onsen-Kamikochi-Hirayu onsen-Takayama-Shirakawago-Kanazawa by bus. These are covered by 3-star route ticket, except for Hirayu onsen-Kamikochi-Hirayu onsen.

All in all you will take

Tokyo to Nikko and vice versa.
Tokyo to Otsuki to Matsumoto
Kanazawa to Kyoto
Kyoto to Nara and vice versa.
Kyoto to Tokyo.

I think JR pass 7 days will pay off.
