Sanriku Coast day trip from Sendai/Morioka 2016/10/20 19:36
Travelling mid-April 2017 and staying 3 nights in Sendai.
Trains/buses from Morioka to Miyako seem limited. Has anyone got a tip for the best way to travel? Can anyone recommend a tour operator?
Alternatively how easy would it be to hire a car for the day in Morioka?
Thanks.

Uh, there is one bus every hour between Morioka and Miyako. That's pretty frequent for a long-distance bus line.

I've rented a car from Mazda, which is next to one of the Toyoko Inns in front of Morioka Station, and a mini-van from Nissan which is a block further north. The drive to Miyako is not very busy once you get out of town, and the coast is easy driving. There are a couple of miti-no-ekis along the way if you want to take a break.

If you want to get to Jodogahama or Taro with its broken tsunami walls or other points along the coast, the car will make your time most efficient. Trains are few and you'd depend on taxis where the trains don't go.

Just have the car rental agent program their telephone number into the navigator if you don't know how to do that so it's an easy return. If you get on the wrong road coming back into town and end up around the old castle site, the roads can be narrow and busy.

There are a couple of rental places near Miyako Station also, but you would depend on a return train to Morioka. One is Nippon Rentacar. If using this place I would stay overnight in Miyako as the last train to Morioka leaves around 4 PM.
